2018 WA Innovator of the Year finalists announced

Finalists in the prestigious 2018 WA Innovator of the Year (‘WA IOTY’) program will battle it out over the coming weeks in hopes of sharing in over $165,000 and securing an invaluable platform from which to showcase their innovation nationally and internationally.

The WA Innovator of the Year program, which is delivered by the Western Australian Government Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, has celebrated some of WA’s most talented innovators who have gone on to commercialise new products and services, win new markets and disrupt old ones.

This year, there are a record 27 finalists across seven categories, including the Mitsubishi Corporation Emerging Innovation Category, the Mitsubishi Corporation Growth Category, the Woodside Oil & Gas Encouragement Award, the South32 Technology & Innovation Encouragement Award, the Business News ‘Great for State’ Encouragement Award, the DXC Digital Innovation Encouragement Award and the WA Young Innovator of the Year.

The finalists and semi-finalists all gain from valuable mentoring and training provided by the WA IOTY program. Finalists also receive a professionally produced video of their innovation and business that they can go on to use to promote their business.

Mark Pullen, Principal of Watermark, who has been involved with WA IOTY since the program’s inception in 2006, said, ‘We are delighted with this year’s line-up of finalists. WA IOTY presents an opportunity for winners to maximise the commercialisation potential of their innovations by encouraging links between industry, government and research and helps to facilitate opportunities for start-ups to compete nationally and overseas.”

“The program continues to gain momentum and we are particularly pleased to welcome the introduction in 2018 of two new categories, the Business News ‘Great for State’ Encouragement Award and the DXC Digital Innovation Encouragement Award. This year’s additions combined with the inaugural award for Young Innovator of the Year in 2017, have further invigorated the program,” he said.

Winners of the 2018 WA IOTY and Encouragement awards will be announced on 7 November 2017 at an awards event and full details of this year’s finalists may be viewed at: http://www.newindustries.wa.gov.au/ioty-2018
