Mark has a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Melbourne, as well as a PhD (also from the University of Melbourne) in the field of telecommunications and optical fibre technology. He has been working in the area of intellectual property management generally since 1999, and joined Watermark in 2002, qualifying as an Australian Patent and Trade Mark Attorney torwards the end of 2004.
In between his undergraduate and postgraduate studies, Mark worked for Telstra Research Laboratories on projects related to broadband digital switching technologies. After completing his PhD, he held positions as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Melbourne, then as the Intellectual Property Manager at a successful Australian startup company developing switching equipment for optical fibre networks. Prior to joining Watermark Mark worked for another startup developing computer software for the design and deployment of advanced telecommunications networks.
In the course of his career, Mark has worked in research and commercial environments, and in both large and small companies. His technical experience spans digital and computer systems, optical and photonic technologies, telecommunications, data communications, software development and Internet technology and applications. Mark assists clients with the management and protection of their intellectual property, including patents and trade marks, in a diverse range of industries and technologies spanning relatively simple mechanical devices through to high-end telecommunications systems and applications, signal processing, e-commerce, and online business systems.
Mark has particular expertise in preparing and prosecuting patent applications in Australia and overseas (including the United States and Europe) relating to software-implemented inventions and business processes.
