Track-em

Kashif Saleem

With a passion for problem solving and a background in commerce and business information systems, ECU graduate Kashif Saleem, had a ‘light bulb’ moment when working on mine sites as an IT support technician. Colleagues would regularly mention the loss and theft of materials – a seemingly widespread problem that prompted Kashif to develop Track’em, a unique materials management system to deliver absolute control and supply chain visibility.

Drawing on a unique combination of 3D modeling, GPS tracking, Bluetooth tags and radio frequency identification, Track’em, which was invented in 2006, is now used widely in the mining, oil & gas, engineering and construction sectors allowing users to get up to date information on their moving assets. From the outset, Kashif was well aware of the importance of protecting his intellectual property.

Track’em has grown steadily over the years and to date, has served over 45 clients and projects globally including BP, Woodside, BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance and John Holland. And, on the back of Track’em’s success and in response to demand for additional solutions based products, Kashif has adapted his technology for other sectors to develop Time’em (time and attendance and work pack/job tracking system), Store’em (stores, tools and PPE Management system) and Transport’em (supply chain and logistic management system).

“I strongly believe that IP has played a major part in the success of Track’em”.

Kashif says that having an idea “is not even 1% of the overall picture of the success of a company. How do you turn an idea into a product, a product into a company and how do you protect it?”

He says that having the right advice is crucial, especially when it comes to contracts.

“You need to go in with your eyes open to what you’re signing. Having worked with Watermark for many years, I would highly recommend Watermark. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

In recognition of Kashif’s journey with his unique innovation, Track’em was awarded overall WA Innovator of the Year in 2015 and the company continues to go from strength to strength.
